About Sicily
The Italian region of Sicily is the Mediterranean's largest island, located right before Sardinia and Piedmont. The island is home to 5 million inhabitants, has the tallest active volcano in all of Europe (Mount Etna), and plenty of archaeological and historical sites. While it stands as one of the most beautiful places to visit for a modern day vacation, Sicily was once hailed as a historical crossroad, where it finally turned into a melting pot for cultures and a pawn for conquest.

People of Sicily
One main things that tourists will notice about the residents of Sicily is that they refer to themselves as Sicilian, and not Italian. Because of this, the idea that these cultures are inherently different has become a prominent ideation in society today. Visitors encounter a distinctive dialect that is quite similar to neighbouring regions in Southern Italy. A great example is my Sicilian husband, his Italian dialect is very different to the people living in the north of Italy, so much so, that when we visit Milan his Italian language skills go from fluent to just mediocre!
Tourists will notice the utter richness of Sicilian culture, a youthful dynamic that is vibrant and a liberal way of life. There are many things to do in Sicily, and a lot of visitors will enjoy spending time interacting with the locals and getting involved in the rich community culture.

While Sicilians are of course Italian, the differences in their cuisines are palpable. That said, if you dine out in Sicily restaurants, you will find that Sicilian cuisine centres its food on seafood and fresh produce, with certain tastes harkening back to a variety of cultures. Food in Sicily truly showcases some of the most interesting regional dishes, given the bounty provided by both the region's earth and sea.
If you're keen on local and organic produce, then the food in Sicily restaurants can cater to that preference. This is especially the case in Taormina restaurants, which is a must-go-to spot for any foodies (myself included). While you’re there, head over to Isola Bella, a small island also known as the pearl of the Ionian Sea, a beautiful nature reserve you can walk to from the southern end of Mazzaro beach in Taormina.
Most importantly, you just can’t skip the Sicily pasta or pizza because they are definitely worth sinking your teeth into. A little fun fact is that the first cookbook ever written dates back to the 5th century and was written in Sicily, how cool is that?
